The 5th edition of Black Canvas Contemporary Film Festival will take place from October 1 to 10, 2021 of this year. Under an innovative hybrid format, a risky and challenging programming, as well as a series of activities that will allow us to delve into the thinking and reflection of cinema. We invite you to go beyond the canvas.

The Transmutation of the Canvas: 5th Anniversary Special Edition 2021.

Aware of the current situation and in line with the challenging and risky spirit that its history demands, Black Canvas Contemporary Film Festival has decided to mutate and transform itself; to seek new ways to offer the best auteur cinema on the international scene and continue to consolidate itself as one of the most radical and proactive festivals in the country and in Latin America.

Seeking to expand the exhibition options in order to meet the needs of the Mexican public and at the same time responsibly comply with the requirements and recommendations of the health authorities, Black Canvas Contemporary Film Festival will once again be presented in a hybrid format, where we will continue to offer the best of the seventh art in our venues: Cineteca Nacional, Cinemex, La Casa del Cine MX and the Universidad de la Comunicación as a meeting point to celebrate cinema with outdoor screenings, plus a significant number of live discussions within this same format, a safe outdoor environment.

To this list we add the digital platform FilminLatino to watch movies in streaming, accessible to the entire national territory, as a window that amplifies the decentralization of cinema and offers what we consider the most important of the film scene of the last year, platform where we will gather much of our programming, where cinephiles from all over the country can learn and get into the offer of online programming of the fifth edition. In parallel, through various spaces and media such as our website, social networks and digital spaces of the Universidad de la Comunicación, we will offer talks, Q&As, round tables, interviews and a diversity of content as part of the already known Canvas Extension, a space for training and reflection on the cinema of our times, this will take place during the dates of the festival.

As an extra effort to our search for the formation of audiences found in the unique and particular cinematographic panorama that Black Canvas offers in Mexico, we can announce that the digital screenings on the FILMINLATINO platform, as well as those that will take place at the Universidad de la Comunicación will be free.

The Transmutation Continues: Beyond the Canvas for the second consecutive year brings together more than 27 films that make up one of the most stimulating international competitions of the festival.

As part of our relentless pursuit, we proudly present our Beyond the Canvas section, focused on selecting the proposals with the most radical and challenging offer on the international film scene, wich, in this our fifth edition, we present as an international competition, combining formats, genres and renowned authors with new talents that together exemplify the new and future paths that the filmmaking world has in store for us.

This competition joins our New Horizon International Feature Film Competition, the International Short Film Competition and the National Short Film Competition. All of them will have a jury of international guests who will honor us with their physical and virtual presence in what will be a film celebration.

The schedule of our competitions, guests, juries, activities as well as the rest of our programming can be found on our website. We invite you to be aware of our social networks where we will share more surprises and detailed information about our fifth edition.

Hoping that you and your loved ones are well, we send you our warmest greetings and look forward to meeting you and enjoying together the best of contemporary cinema, from October 1 to 10, 2021.
